What the fucking fuck? Ok, going on a bit of a personal peeve rant here. When I search for recipes online, I DO NOT want to find things like this: CINNAMON STREUSEL MUFFINS 1 (15.2 oz) pkg cinnamon streusel muffin mix 1/2 cup dried apple pieces, roughly chopped Prepare muffin mix according to pkg directions, stirring dried apple pieces into batter. Place foil baking cups in muffin pans. Spoon batter into cups, filling two-thirds full. Bake and cool muffins according to pkg directions. That is NOT A RECIPE, you incompetant, lazy, retarded, sibling fucking lice infested virus ridden HOBO.Sorry, that may have been a little harsh on the homeless population of the world. But SERIOUSLY, folks. This one is almost as good. Vegetable Casserole 2 cans mixed vegetables, drained 3/4 c. mayonnaise 1 can Cheese Whip (Whatever the fuck that is) Mix ingredients together and pour in casserole dish. Top with 1 1/4 cups crushed Ritz crackers mixed with 1/2 stick of melted butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until bubbly. Dear god. We're talking about COOKING. And BASIC cooking, at that, becasue I'm well aware that some can be pretty hard, but not THESE! Not goddamn rocket science, folks. How can the preparation of food be becoming a lost art?! Just...just...ARGH. My head is going to explode. This is driving me utterly insane. 1. Packet mix food is mostly disgusting, why would I want to use it? 2. If I have the instructions ALREADY WRITTEN FOR ME on the side of the BOX, why the hell would I be looking for a recipe ONLINE?! I want a flamethrower. A big one. If the people who wrote those 'recipes' read this, hide. I'm coming for you, bitches. Current Mood: WTF?!Current Music: Head going boom. |

Dark Matter: Actual Play Setting and Character SessionThe process of creating this game started from scratch over coffee with nina_in_nz. I hadn't gamed with her before, so I wanted to know what sort of games she was interested in playing. Conversely, surrealfish is one of my oldest gaming friends (I've been roleplaying with him since I caught him and xyphoid playing The Temple of Elemental Evil in the StAC library in 1991) so I already had a good idea of the kinds of things which would fly with him. At this point the game was "some sort of sci-fi" and I was going to read my new Shadowrun 4e rules. I decided that would be too much in the way of system and setting for a three to four session game. Round two was an email in which I solicited input about the sort of game and the sort of setting both players wanted: What would you like to do in the game? What do you find interesting or cool about sci fi? How far in the future would you like to go? Are there any setting elements from other genres you'd like to see? How would you describe the kind of game you'd like to play (You are __(characters)__ who __(do what)__ in __(setting)__)?Their answers were pretty much on the same page, and with two players this wasn't a particularly arduous process! So I collated their responses, made a few notes of questions to be discussed in person, added a few tweaks of my own and decided on a system. Yesterday was the first session with all three of us together. I went through my notes (although I should have printed them out as well) asking questions, discussing various aspects of the setting that we were unclear about, presenting various setting elements and explaining elements of the rules as I went. After an initial pass through, we made characters (with 10 advances rather than the 5 for starting characters), answered a few more setting questions, designed the ship and briefly discussed the starting system. This morning I flavoured and expanded my notes. I'm excited about the collaborative setting and the set-up and I hope nina_in_nz and surrealfish can see their ideas amongst the material. |

Dark Matter: Set-up Smuggling on the FringeThe Brief:The players are criminals, mercenaries, oddjobbers, refugees, dissidents and explorers who, by choice or necessity, exist on the fringes where central control has devolved to local powers of various sizes. They do jobs of varying legality, try to keep their morals, and uncover secrets about the true nature of the universe, its history, and their place in it. ( The Crew ) |

Dark Matter: Setting material II There's No Place Like HomeThe Mazerolles system lies in the wide Pause-Imperial fringe zone between Imperial space and The Pause Authority. The nearest Imperial system, al-Beidh, is six wormhole jumps away. Mazerolles is an F class star (whiter and hotter than Earth’s sun) ( with five planets. ) |

Dark Matter: Setting material A Disintegrating GalaxyEarth’s galactic empire is splintering under the pressure of internal tensions and external forces. Opportunistic system- and sector-level government structures are breaking away, dissident movements are seizing planets and outposts. Imperial military forces resist in some sectors, collude in others and elsewhere instigate. At the core, the imperial courtiers continue their petty bickering amidst pomp and excess, the escalating price of imported wine provoking only changes in personal and house status. ( While their masters play, the various arms of the imperial bureaucracy struggle to maintain their own integrity and power. ) |

Once again My updates have been few and far between. Some have noticed my lack of presence on #kaos also. Did 2x weeks working at a winter milking farm in Te Pirita. Very beautiful place and I had a wonderful time there, but at 30kms each way, it was not affordable for me to come home for the break in between milkings. This meant that I left home 4:30am, and returned home around 6:30pm, which is pretty much my reason for not being online. I set up my mattress in the back of the landcruiser, and most days had a wee nap during the break, which certainly helped the energy levels, but still, by the time I got home I was pretty much ready to sleep. Am now back at other farm. 11kms from home means that on days like today, I can come home and chill out and skim over all the far too many LJ entries that I am behind on.
Christchurchians will be cursing this rain. It is worse when you are outside in it! I don't recommend anyone attempt to enter our property in a 2 wheel drive. Unless they are a thrill seeker and are prepared to bribe us to tow you out!
I came into town yesterday, for the first time since the 48. Caught up with my old workmates, my mother, and some kaosians. The first time I have been in the "lcr" (ahem.. smokers cafe) in god knows how many years! Wondered if I should pretend to be a student. lols. Time flies when you are having fun, and I am still a little behind on all the odds and sods I was gonna do. Did enjoy The Warehouse sale though.
When I first started on the farm I felt a little lonely. Not majorly, just that it was odd having no people around. At Harvey's there was always someone to talk to on my lunch break, and there was always South City to browse around. I am used to being alone now. Certainly happier with my own company than I have been in the past. This has to be a good thing. |

CROOKED LITTLE VEIN Reviewed At AICN My editor just sent me a link to a review of CROOKED LITTLE VEIN at Ain’t It Cool News, coinciding with the paperback release. AICN would be pretty much the last place I’d expect to get reviewed. I haven’t read it yet, but, still, very nice of them to take the time, I thought…

World Wide Week 2008 Someone asked me yesterday, "why do you do the thing with the self portraits?" And it’s like this: because people forget that there are other people on the other end of the internet. People forget that they’re side by side with other people every time they visit a website, that they’re talking with real people every time they post a comment. It’s too easy for people to let everyone become anonymous on the net. I don’t like that. This whole thing is made out of people. Once a year, I like to remind you.
Also, this site has always attracted interesting-looking people. Oh, and second row, far right — that’s comics writer/artist Brandon Graham. I think one of his first paid gigs would have been on a TRANSMETROPOLITAN page, in TALES OF HUMAN WASTE.

GRAVEL: Scriptment Writing On the horror serial GRAVEL, I work in a style called "scriptment." It’s partway between a full script and a "treatment," or detailed synopsis. It’s not quite a short story, not a Marvel-style outline, neither fish nor fowl nor arse eel. This thing then goes to Mike Wolfer, who adapts it into a full script. Some people have asked how much of GRAVEL is me and how much is Mike. Here’s the opening of the scriptment for GRAVEL #3, out in store this week:

GRAVEL 3 "ON ILKLEY MOOR BAHT’ AT" 22PP WARREN ELLIS
OPEN ON: A TRAIN cutting through England in the morning.
Inside: in an otherwise empty carriage, William Gravel on the phone, his kitbag next to him on the seat.
Gravel: "…yes, she’s dead too. But you know that, or else you wouldn’t be asking me what’s next. Listen, I’m in no mood for stupid fucking games. I think it’s time you told me who you are."
Phone: "William, old sock. I understand you’ve been busy, but you’re really not thinking, are you?"
Gravel: "Yeah, and I didn’t go to fucking university or learn how to flex me arsehole for the pleasure of my betters. So I’m hanging up now."
Phone: "Who benefits from the Sigsand Manuscript being collected and reconstituted, Gravel?"
Gravel: "Me, with a bit of luck. Bye."
He switches the phone off, tosses it in his kitbag.
Pissed off, he settles back, looks out the window at the trees and fields.
A voice from off: "Shite, ennit? Southern England looks like it were made by fucking Lego."
"Aah, I dunno about that. I mean, rather here that up fucking north, know what I mean?"
And then he realises that he was alone.
Looks around.
And SYKES is sitting opposite him. SYKES is a very old man, but his hair’s still black. Dressed in a heavy, thick black jacket, a thick blue sweater under it, a black scarf, black trousers and heavy boots. He always has a tall shepherd’s crook in his hand, which he uses like a walking staff. Very very pale — the only colour in him is his blue eyes and the blue sweater, cobalt blue.
Gravel can only breathe "…Sykes." He is almost frightened. Certainly surprised.
"Aye. Sykes it is. I thought it were time we had a talk, Bill."
Gravel’s hand steals into his kitbag, closing around his gun inside there.
"A talk? Or another shot at killing me."
"Nay, I’ve got no trouble with thee, William Gravel, so you let go of your gun there. I want to talk."
He stands up. "But not down here. I get a rash on me privates if I come further south than Watford Gap. Come home to Yorkshire with me."
Gravel closes his hand around his kitbag, standing. "Listen, you’re here now, let’s just walk up to the buffet car, get a couple of pints and talk there…"
And suddenly he’s standing up on a blasted bleak Yorkshire moor under a sky that’s grey and black.
"…shit."
And Sykes turns away from him, walking across the moor. He sings:
"Where hast thou been since I saw thee? On Ilkley Moor baht ’at.
“On Ilkley Moor baht ’at! On Ilk-ley Moor bah-t’at…"
Gravel makes a face. "Do what?"
Sykes: "It’s a song, Bill. The oldest song I know. On Ilkley Moor baht ’at."
Gravel: "Does it translate into English, you Yorkshire bastard?

Movies on Friday At Chez Homer! No real idea what, I don't particularly appreciate anyone quoting an entire movies worth of lines just ahead of the characters, same goes for quoting them in time. If you can resist the urges to this sort of behaviour, I shant have to kick you out of my house.
Not certain how late it'll go, possibly not very. There you go, this is as widely publicized as this gets.
Oh, yeah. Starts at 7:30, because I'm totally going out for pizza with the Philosophy department on Friday night, and might not be home before about 7. |

The Crew vs. Heavenly Creature Well we lost by a lot. I'm not sure what they got, but it was >10 points on us. We got 6 points. On the one hand I'm disappointed, on the other hand - I threw 2 of those points, and caught another 2. I had a pretty good game. Apart from a couple of misreads**, my throws were good and I caught a lot of pretty questionable passes. The team as a whole didn't have quite such a good game. In particular, we dropped a lot and threw some really stupid stuff at the start. The other team had pretty tight defense, so a mistake=a turnover 99% of the time. Sunday is Indoorpendence day - the large social grade tournament being held at the TSB arena. We shall play all day, then play a double in the evening (assuming the 10th team don't confirm). We will rock, because we have to, and because it's a story we can tell our ultimate descendants. 11hrs of Ultimate! We are hard core!*** --- ** This is becoming a bit of a habit. I'll throw a disc to someone just as they are cutting away etc. It's... frustrating at the best of times, but why _now_? It's not like I'm playing with new people. *** Too much time around Nick B, I fear. Still, we are Totally.going.to.Rock. Current Mood: accomplished |

So, well, I didn't get the library job, which I suppose is just as well, because the last time anyone from Upper Riccarton saw me I was having a huge coughing fit by the timesheets. Full on, with the tears and the retching and everything. I had to go and hide in the bathroom and hope to god and all his fairies that my throat would SHUT THE FUCK UP sometime soon, cos I had to catch a bus to Hornby. But it did, and I did, and thus ended my fortnight of shelving at UR, which is fancy shmancy and filled with books I haven't seen before. Today I woke up at Ruby's, went back to sleep, dreamed I came home, woke up and didn't know where I was, went back to sleep again till 12, crawled out of bed ten minutes before the bus, which I had to wait half an hour for, went home, crawled back into bed and read for an hour. It is not pleasent, getting out of bed twice in one morning. I was supposed to go into Victim Support but, uh, I forgot the stuff I needed to take in. Because I'm a doof. Saw Get Smart last night, which was hilarious :D There are a couple of moments when things COULD have gone really stupid and predictable, or they could have gotten some really cheap and stupid laughs, but they DIDN'T, which made me MORE THAN HAPPY. It's like... you see the horrible winceworthy slapstick/misunderstanding coming, and it DOESN'T HAPPEN. Thank god. I'd totally see it again but the other are going on Sunday when I'm on duty, so I'll be HOME ALONE. Baking bread like a bitch. Like Sunshine. Which I'm reading again. I love her. Her and Con and Mel and Pat. All DL names. Not that I've made Mel yet but Miles thinks bout her a lot, so it totally counts. Also? Firefly commentary by Joss is FREAKING AWESOME. Hearing him and Nathan enthuse over chickens is brilliant. Cath and Jen just came in. Apparently there was a Noise at the back door. Jen wasn't going to check It out alone and she wasn't going first, so Cath picked up the roll of linin that's been sitting in our corner (for when we get round to making garb with Sam) for a while now. Imagine breaking into our house and getting assulted by Cath with a massive roll of fabric. Oh, the shame. I have my birthday off work :D I applied to get the Saturday after it off too but we'll see. I'm a lazy bint, but I have a fuckload of holiday time I haven't taken yet and so, I take it. Don't know what I'm actually going to do on my birthday (next Friday) but something'll come up. Maybe we'll watch the new Bruce Campbell movie (Alien Apocalypse, with Renee O'Connor AKA Grabielle from Xena I shit thee not) on our nice new bigger telly and get drunk on wine and magaritas. Yes, that'll do. People free next Friday? Current Mood: coldCurrent Music: Zytrate Full Mix from Repo (again and again ;)) |
